a moment to pause

take a moment, step back and observe

Sometimes, in amongst the chaos of everyday life, it is important to take a moment to step back and observe. When the world feels vast and overwhelming, when the future feels tainted by uncertainty, moments punctuated by stillness and simplicity can remind us that despite the vastness, we have a place in it all, and power to make change. If we choose to pay attention to the life around us, and appreciate the animals and places we live amongst, our everyday habits can change. Inspiration and appreciation play an essential role in forging a future that is sustainable for all living things.

Life on Land–Goal 15, calls institutions to ‘protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss’. At a glance, such a task seems unapproachable and in many ways, unattainable. But, it is important to remind yourself that each action, each decision you make that is founded in compassion, is a contribution.

The interview

Hayley Rodgers, a Sunshine Coast based photographer and UniSC student, is in the business of inspiring people. Her photographs work to remind the viewer both of the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Delve has been given an opportunity to speak with her.

Firstly, what is it about nature photography that you love?

I have always had a passion for nature, especially growing up on a property where I was able to appreciate the circle of life in all its beauty. Being able to combine my passion for photography and nature is a perfect blessing that assists in conveying my message of conservation. As creatives we are constantly looking for ways to express our minds in ways words can't explore and for me it's nature photography and capturing the beauty of our natural world.

What is one important thing that you’ve learnt throughout your creative/ professional journey?

What is one change that you’d like to see in the world in the near future?

One thing that I would desperately love to see managed is our laws on our native dingos. It's so important that this species is taken care of and I would love to see the negative stigma around dingos changed for good.

What would be a perfect day for you?

The perfect day for me would be exploring somewhere new in nature. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a very extraverted person, but there's something so peaceful about being still and observing life around you.

Balancing, work, study, and everyday life can be challenging; what do you do to calm yourself?

Being overwhelmed is a very common experience when working and studying but I always allocate at least one hour a day to myself. It's easy to get consumed in life but at the end of every day it's you who you're stuck with, so be stuck with the best version of yourself rather than the stressed and miserable version.

On a day out shooting, what do you take with you?

On a regular shoot I will take my sturdy Sony A7 iii, my tripod, my gimble and lots of water (and food I can shove in my pockets)

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Definitely, be patient and practice your passion cause you'll never work a day in your life if you do what you love.

What is one important thing that you’ve learnt throughout your creative/professional journey?

I think patience is a skill that has changed my process both creatively and professionally. I find there are so many ideas constantly churning through my mind and to have the ability to take a step back and work one step at a time is really important to avoid burnout and disappointment. Teaching yourself patience is such a great transferable skill to have as a creator.
